Musician
Bhekumuzi Agrippa Luthuli (1961–2010) stands as one of the most celebrated, commercially successful, and defining figures in the history of Maskandi music. Born in KwaMaphumulo near Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal, Luthuli taught himself to play guitar on a homemade tin instrument while herding cattle as a boy. He began his professional career in the early 1980s as lead singer and guitarist for the Mbaqanga group Oshomi, before embarking on a solo career that redefined modern Zulu folk music.
Across a career spanning over 23 studio albums and more than a million units sold, Luthuli became a voice for working-class migrant labourers through his razor-sharp storytelling, humour, and signature rhythmic guitar arrangements. Recording extensively under Gallo Record Company, his legendary catalogue features multi-platinum and award-winning albums such as Unembeza, Impempe, Inkinga Ngu R7, and his final studio release Imali Yabelungu—which achieved Gold status within a single week. A recipient of OKTV, SATMA, and posthumous South African Music Awards (SAMA) honours, Luthuli’s profound songwriting legacy remains a foundational pillar of South Africa’s living cultural heritage.
