Don Laka

Donald Mahwetša Laka, known worldwide as Don Laka, is a legendary South African jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist who revolutionised modern African music by creating the genre known as Kwaai-Jazz. Born in Mamelodi, Pretoria, Laka achieved a Grade 8 in classical guitar at the Royal Academy of Music before embarking on a career as a performer, studio maestro, and teacher. He rose to prominence playing with influential Afro-fusion groups like Sakhile, Umoja, and Ymage, before co-founding Kalawa Jazmee—one of South Africa’s premier black-owned independent record labels.

As a composer and producer, Laka’s groundbreaking Kwaai-Jazz sound fused traditional African rhythms, marabi, and kwaito beats with classical piano and contemporary jazz improvisation. His solo albums—including Destiny (1997), Supernova (1998), Pyramid (2001), and Paradise—earned multi-platinum sales and critical acclaim across Africa and Europe. Laka has composed orchestral arrangements for legends like Sibongile Khumalo and produced landmark, Grammy-nominated albums for Hugh Masekela (Jabulani). Administered via Gallo Music Publishers, Don Laka’s extensive compositional catalogue remains a foundational pillar of South Africa’s contemporary jazz and urban musical landscape.
