Kanda Bongo Man is a Congolese superstar and a pivotal figure in popularising Soukous, the lively dance music from Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), to the global mainstream. Often called “The Magical King of Soukous,” his music is known for an aura of optimism, joy, and radiating happiness, delivering exhilarating and energetic performances deeply rooted in the Congolese music tradition.

Kanda Bongo Man’s music is most famous for its entrancing and mesmerising guitar solos and riffs. These solos gave birth to the renowned Kwasa Kwasa dance, which was championed by figures like John Peel and Andy Kershaw in the late 1980s.

Kanda Bongo Man is known for his high tenor vocals delivered in both Lingala and French.
