'Om' Alec Khaoli

Alec Molefi Khaoli (known professionally as “Om” Alec Khaoli) is a South African bassist, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who played a central role in the evolution of Afro-rock, bubblegum, and early African electronic pop. Khaoli first gained prominence as the bassist for The Beaters and its successor Harari, helping define South Africa’s Afro-rock scene in the 1970s.

In the 1980s, Khaoli transitioned into a solo career and launched the group Umoja. Early adoption of synthesisers and drum machines yielded hits such as “Magic Touch” (1982), “You Are The One” (1984), and the double-platinum album 707 (1988). Operating from his independent Fireworks Studio in Soweto, Khaoli built a self-sustained production footprint. Gallo Music Publishers administers his publishing catalogue.
