Penwell Kunene

Musician

Penwell Kunene was a foundational and versatile South African musician, recognised as one of the key architects of the popular Disco/Pop Reggae sound that dominated Southern Africa in the 1990s and 2000s.

A highly gifted vocalist, he first gained prominence as a backing singer for the legendary group Splash. He then co-founded and served as the original lead singer of the super-group Matshikos, alongside Joseph Tshimange, under Dan Tshanda’s Dalom Music label. Matshikos’ debut album, “The Park Is Mine, was a massive success, establishing Kunene’s voice as a regional staple.

In addition to performing, Kunene was a talented producer and songwriter who played a significant role in shaping the sound of numerous other artists, including Patricia Majalisa and the group By4, which he co-founded. He also pursued a solo career, releasing successful albums like “On My Own under his own PK Movement label. His distinctive style—a powerful blend of soulful vocals, infectious basslines, and synth-driven dance rhythms—cemented his legacy as a deeply influential figure in the music scene of South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.
