Mfaz' Omnyama
Musician
Mphatheni Khumalo (1959–2001), revered across the globe by his iconic stage name Mfaz’ Omnyama, was a towering giant of Maskandi music and one of South Africa’s most brilliant traditional lyricists and guitarists. Born in rural Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, Khumalo was a left-handed, self-taught master of the acoustic guitar whose signature picking style and poetic songwriting redefined the genre. Discovered by legendary broadcaster Bodloza Nzimande, Khumalo signed with Gallo Record Company, where his exceptional storytelling was brought to the forefront of South African popular culture.
As a solo artist, he delivered a relentless string of critically acclaimed, top-selling albums for Gallo, including Emazweni Baba, Khula Tshitshi Lami, and Ngisebenzile Mama—anchored by timeless hit singles like “Ngiyashisa Bhe!”. Beyond his monumental solo career, he was a powerful advocate for peace and cultural collaboration, famously joining forces with fellow icons Phuzekhemisi and Ihhashi Elimhlophe to form the Maskandi supergroup Izingqungqulu Zomhlaba. Khumalo’s immense musical footprint extended far beyond local borders, taking traditional Zulu folk music to global stages across Germany, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Though his life was cut short at age 42, Mfaz’ Omnyama’s profound songwriting legacy remains a cornerstone of African musical heritage, continuing to inspire generations of artists who follow his rhythm.
