Obed Ngobeni

Obed Ngobeni is a pioneering South African composer, guitarist, and bandleader widely celebrated as one of the founding architects of Shangaan Disco (Xitsonga Disco). Rising to prominence in the mid-1980s alongside his vocal backing ensemble, The Kurhula Sisters, Ngobeni revolutionised Xitsonga popular music by fusing traditional rhythms with electric guitars, heavy synthesiser basslines, and uptempo township pop grooves.

Ngobeni achieved massive commercial success with landmark releases under Teal Record Company, including his defining 1985 album Mchoza and the 1988 classic Eka Diza (also released as Eka Dize). Supported by signature tracks like “Ta Mavala” and “Mchoza”, his infectious sound crossed regional boundaries and laid the structural foundation for modern Xitsonga electronic music. Administered under Gallo Music Publishers, Ngobeni’s vibrant catalogue remains an essential pillar of South African heritage music.
