West Nkosi

Musician

West Nkosi (1940–1998) was a legendary South African saxophonist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer universally revered as one of the ultimate architects of Mbaqanga and modern township jive. Emerging from the Pretoria kwela scene as a pennywhistle player in the 1950s, Nkosi transitioned to alto saxophone and co-founded the seminal Makgona Tsohle Band. As the driving instrumental force behind Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, the group pioneered the high-octane electric Mbaqanga sound that revolutionised South African popular music.

Joining Gallo Record Company’s Mavuthela Music division alongside producer Rupert Bopape, Nkosi evolved into one of the most visionary A&R executives and producers in African music history. He personally discovered and produced the first 22 albums for Ladysmith Black Mambazo, while helming hit recordings for Mpharanyane, Amaswazi Emvelo, Moses Mchunu, and Phuzekhemisi. In addition to producing Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens’ global crossover releases in the late 1980s, Nkosi enjoyed a celebrated solo career with albums like Jump and Jive and Rhythm of Healing. Administered through Gallo Music Publishers, his vast catalogue of compositions and productions remains a cornerstone of Southern African cultural heritage.
