Chicco Twala

Sello “Chicco” Twala is an undisputed architect of modern South African popular music, standing as one of the most successful, influential, and politically potent producers, songwriters, and artists of the late 20th century. Emerging in the 1970s and dominating the 1980s and 90s, Twala became a primary engine of the bubblegum music explosion and the foundational rhythm that eventually birthed Kwaito.

His career at Gallo Record Company solidified his status as a hitmaker with an extraordinary Midas touch. In 1987, his solo track “We Miss You Manelow”—a cleverly disguised, multi-platinum anthem dedicated to the then-imprisoned Nelson Mandela—became a massive, historic success and a defiant soundtrack to the anti-apartheid struggle. Twala’s genius lay in his ability to blend infectious, electronic disco production with profound socio-political commentary that spoke directly to the township experience.

As a mastermind behind the mixing console, Chicco shaped the definitive sounds of South Africa’s biggest icons. He was the chief creative force behind the legendary Brenda Fassie, producing her historic comeback album Memeza (featuring the timeless hit “Vul’indlela”) and Nomakanjani. From driving his own solo hits like “I Need Some Money” to producing definitive works for acts like Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Chimora, Chicco Twala’s peerless songwriting, arrangement, and production legacy remain a cornerstone of South African cultural heritage.
