Linda Mkhize (1981 – 2018), professionally known as ProKid (later shortened to PRO), was a South African rapper and producer from Klipspruit, Soweto. He is widely and consistently cited as one of the most influential MCs in South African music history and a pioneer of Kasi Rap.
ProKid’s pivotal role was in localising South African Hip Hop. He gained fame for his unique ability to rap fluently in a blend of isiZulu, Tsotsi Taal (township vernacular), and English, creating a raw and authentic voice that directly reflected the realities of the “Kasi” (township) lifestyle.
ProKid’s influence is profound, having paved the way for subsequent generations of Kasi Rap artists, including the likes of Kwesta, AKA, and K.O. His success demonstrated that authentic, vernacular-driven content could dominate the South African music charts.
