Dr. Thomas Chauke

Dr. Thomas Hasani “Shinyori” Chauke (born 1952) is a celebrated and highly decorated South African musician, composer, and producer. He is widely recognised as the “King of Xitsonga Music” for his pivotal role in developing and promoting the Xitsonga traditional genre over a career spanning more than four decades.

Chauke is the leader of the musical ensemble, the Shinyori Sisters, with whom he created the unique Shimatsatsa style (Tsonga disco). This signature sound is defined by its repetitive electric guitar melodies, four-on-the-floor rhythms, and the blending of male lead vocals with stacked female choral harmonies. His prolific output is catalogued through his annual album series, Shimatsatsa (“a beautiful girl”), which has surpassed 37 volumes and achieved numerous gold, platinum, and triple-platinum sales certifications, making him one of South Africa’s best-selling artists in the genre.

Cultural and Academic Recognition

Dr. Chauke’s work has been recognised not just for its musical quality but for its profound contribution to South African culture and language.

• Honorary Doctorate: In 2010, the University of Venda (Univen) conferred upon him an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in African Languages. This prestigious award was specifically given in recognition of the critical role his music, lyrical content, and powerful use of language have played in the development, promotion, and preservation of the Xitsonga language and Vatsonga culture.
• National Honour: He is also a recipient of The Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, awarded by The Presidency of South Africa for his “excellent contribution to the development and promotion of Xitsonga traditional music.
