Musician

Theo Erasmus (1942–2021) was a highly esteemed South African musician, composer, and radio personality, widely recognised as a master of the accordion (trekklavier) and a foremost figure in Boeremusiek (traditional Afrikaans folk music).

With a career that began in the 1960s and spanned six decades, Erasmus was celebrated not only for his technical skill but also for his versatility, playing the concertina, clarinet, tuba, and other instruments. He released numerous popular albums, including Straatkafee (Street Café) and Vakansie Vir Akkordeons (Holiday for Accordions), and even recorded an innovative album of classical melodies played on his trademark trekklavier, Die Classics Gaan Sakkie-Sakkie.

Beyond the stage, Erasmus held a senior role in the music department of the SABC’s Afrikaans radio service and was the composer of the theme song for the popular TV quiz show Flinkdink. His impact was officially recognised with multiple Artes and OKTV Awards for his broadcasting and musical contributions.

In 2021, shortly before his passing, he was inducted into the international Accordion Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential instrumentalists in South African music history.
